TODAY’S PATENT – CRISPR-CAS SYSTEMS FOR ALTERING EXPRESSION OF GENE PRODUCTS

The said invention (US8771945B1) was invented by Feng Zhang and patented by USPTO on July 8th, 2014. Currently, it stands assigned to Massachusetts Institute of Technology Broad Institute Inc.

Recent developments in genome sequencing and analysis have increased the mapping of genetic variables related to many biological activities and illnesses. Precise genome targeting technologies might enable systematic reverse engineering of causative genetic variants and promote synthetic biology, biotechnological, and medicinal applications by selectively perturbing particular genetic components.

The invention provides systems, methods, and compositions for altering the expression of target gene sequences and related gene products. It is considered to be a method of altering the expression of at least one gene product by introducing into a eukaryotic cell containing and expressing a DNA molecule having a target sequence and encoding the gene product an engineered, non-naturally occurring CRISPR-associated (Cas) system comprising one or more vectors.
