The disclosed invention is a method and apparatus for adjusting an orthodontic treatment plan. The method involves acquiring an actual 3D digital model that represents the current positions of a subject’s teeth at a specific stage of treatment, as well as a planned 3D digital model indicating the intended positions of the teeth at the same stage. A first alignment process individually matches each tooth in the actual model with its counterpart in the planned model. A second alignment process then aligns the teeth as a whole between the two models. The deviation between actual and planned positions of each tooth is calculated, and if this deviation exceeds a predefined threshold, the treatment plan is adjusted accordingly to reduce the discrepancy for the affected tooth.
