TODAY’S PATENT – IMPROVEMENT IN BREWING BEER AND ALE
Today’s patent was invented by Louis Pasteur of France on January 28, 1873, bearing patent no. US135245.
Previous to his invention in the process of making beer it has been customary to permit the exposure of the wort7-that is, the boiled extract of malt or other material seasoned with hop or other qualifying iugredientto the action of atmospheric air. He discovered that by contact in the usual way with air during the process not only is the quality of the beer produced much impaired, but also that a less quantity is made from a given amount of wort than can be otherwise produced.
