TODAY’S PATENT – BONE ANCHORING DEVICE
Invented jointly by Lutz Biedermann and Timo Biedermann and is currently assigned to Biedermann Technologies GmbH and Co KG. The invention was published on 28-10-2021 with the patent no. US20210330362A1. This invention relates to bone anchoring devices and kits designed for improved spinal deformity treatment, particularly in pediatric or juvenile spinal deformities and degenerative spinal surgery.
The bone anchoring device comprises a receiving part that can be firmly or pivotably connected to a shank for anchoring in bone. It features a channel for inserting a rod, and a rod receiving member with a passage for the rod, offering two configurations: one allowing rod movement and the other restraining the rod in place. This bone anchoring device can serve as either a fixed or slidable connection to the rod, making it adaptable for spinal growth while correcting deformities.
The choice between fixed or slidable connection is made using an appropriate fixation member. Another aspect introduces the concept of a polyaxial bone anchoring device, offering three types of fixation members: one to lock the head while the rod remains movable, one to keep the head pivotable with a movable rod, and one to lock both the rod and head. This design offers a modular system with different locking configurations by selecting from multiple fixation members. It accommodates spine growth, making it suitable for treating scoliosis, especially in children or juveniles.
Additionally, the bone anchoring device can be either bottom loading or top loading, depending on whether the anchoring element is inserted from the bottom or top of the receiving part. These innovations provide versatility and adaptability in treating spinal deformities and related conditions.
