PATENT OF THE WEEK – UNIVERSAL FLIP-UP ATTACHMENT FOR HELMETS

This invention “Universal flip-up attachment for helmets” was invented by Gary L. Hanson was granted patent on 17^th May, 1977 by the USPTO bearing patent grant number US4023210A to the patentee. The invention relates to a flip-up attachment for attaching a windscreen or other protective device to a helmet comprising a first element removable secured to the helmet in a sealed relationship therewith and a second element pivotally attached to the first element and including as an integral part thereof means by which commercially available face shields may be removably secured thereto without modification of either the attachment or the face shield.

The protection provided by the current creative helmet attachment is not intended to be restricted to use in connection with motorcycle helmets, despite the fact that it is specifically built for such use. The ability to pivot the face shield of a helmet upward so that it does not obstruct the wearer and the ability to ensure that it is locked down in position and that there is no way for the air generated by movement of the wearer or the water caused by rain or snow to drip down onto the operator’s face are both crucial. While in the downward position, the two components are locked together to stop accidental relative movement while in use.
