PATENT OF THE WEEK – MOBILE TELEPHONE

This invention is the predecessor of the modern-day smart phones, this was invented by Philip Christal and was assigned to siemens AG for commercialization of the invention. It was granted patent on 23^rd February 1999 by the USPTO bearing the grant number US5875403A.

The mobile phone according to the invention has a keypad with dialing and function keys, a display window with additional keys (soft keys), and, if necessary, a transmission/reception unit built into the operating part. New message services are being introduced in the new mobile radio system, Group Special Mobile. Some are replacing other mobile radio networks.

Text messages are part of these services. The user’s initial understanding of the numerous operational features is difficult, as is evident from other telecommunications applications, which has an impact on user acceptance. The knowledge that a new message is waiting whose type is to be determined and that is to be read, as well as the knowledge that the message is to be made accessible. According to the invention, a mobile phone can receive and store brief messages.
